The affected traders filed over 2800 claims. However, after verification and scrutiny for double and incorrect claims, 1600 out of the 2800 filed claims found to be genuine. The initially filed compensation claims by the traders amounted to Rs 3 billion. However, when the affectees after taking oath re-filed the claims or corrected their earlier filed claims, the total amount of their claims of losses of goods, cash, and materials, calculated at around Rs 1.2 billion.
Tenders have been invited for reconstruction of the destroyed and those buildings declared dangerous. The approximate cost of their reconstruction is said to be over Rs 0.5 billion. Scrutiny of 1451 claims amounting approximately to Rs 0.73 billion have been completed. The remaining 150 claims, which are yet to be scrutinised, amounts to Rs 0.45 billion approximately.
So, the total amount of compensation claims would be approximately Rs 1.6 billion. The federal and Sindh governments have already set aside Rs 3.5 billion for the purpose and it was suggested that the remaining amount should be utilised on Disaster Management Cell. President Zardari has already given his consent to the proposal on Friday, during distribution of pay order among the affected traders.
